Happy Tuesday, Laurel! 👋
What a week it's been! While Winter Storm Fern brought our community to a standstill with snow and ice, we're also celebrating major news about the future of Laurel Park—one of our most iconic landmarks. The state's decision to purchase and transform the historic racetrack into a training center represents a significant investment in Laurel's heritage and economic future.
As we dig out from the storm and get back to normal operations, we've also witnessed incredible acts of community care—from volunteers helping elderly neighbors clear snow to emergency responders working around the clock to keep us safe. This week's edition highlights both the challenges we've faced and the resilience that makes Laurel special.
We've got 6 events happening THIS WEEK, plus 22 more through March—from sustainability planning to Black History Month celebrations to spring community events.
Let's dive in! 👇
🔥 TOP STORIES
Maryland to Purchase Laurel Park for $50 Million in Historic Deal

In a major reversal that breathes new life into Laurel's historic racetrack, the state of Maryland has reached a tentative agreement to purchase Laurel Park from the Stronach Group for approximately $50 million and convert it into a world-class horse training center.
This May's Preakness Stakes at Laurel—originally planned as the track's final race before closure—will instead kick off Laurel Park's next chapter. The century-old venue was slated to shutter after hosting the Preakness while Pimlico Race Course undergoes reconstruction, but state officials have completely changed course.
The new plan replaces the previous strategy to build a training center at Shamrock Farm in Carroll County. That site was abandoned after environmental studies revealed a population of protected brown trout that would have been harmed by development—what officials called a "fatal flaw." The cost to transform Shamrock into a training facility had also ballooned to more than $210 million, compared to just over $120 million for Laurel Park.
"This represents more than a planned acquisition—it represents the preservation of a storied racing facility," said Maryland Stadium Authority Chair Craig Thompson. Under the new framework, Laurel Park will serve as the primary training facility for horses that will race at the rebuilt Pimlico, operating on a "ship-in" model where trainers bring horses to the track on race days.
For Laurel, this means the preservation of a landmark that's been part of our community's identity for over 100 years, plus continued economic activity and jobs tied to the racing industry. The deal is expected to save $26 million in construction costs that had been budgeted for stalls at Pimlico, redirecting those funds into the Laurel Park transformation.
This is exactly the kind of forward-thinking decision our community deserves. Laurel Park isn't just a racetrack—it's part of who we are.
Winter Storm Fern Hits Greater Laurel with Snow, Sleet, and Freezing Rain

Winter Storm Fern brought a dangerous mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to Laurel over the weekend, creating hazardous travel conditions and keeping many residents indoors through Sunday and into the early part of the week.
Snow began falling across Laurel in the early morning hours Sunday, with flakes reaching Main Street around 2:00 AM. By mid-morning, much of the city had seen approximately 3 to 4 inches of accumulation, followed by sleet and periods of freezing rain as temperatures dropped into the teens.
Ahead of the storm, Mayor Keith R. Sydnor declared a local state of emergency on January 23, allowing the City of Laurel’s Public Works Department to mobilize crews for snow and ice response. Plows and salt trucks worked throughout the weekend to keep primary roadways passable, though persistent sleet and freezing rain made conditions difficult.
Residents reported slick side streets, icy sidewalks, and limited travel conditions throughout the city, especially during the early morning and evening hours. Officials continued urging drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary and to use extreme caution when walking outdoors.
While the storm created challenges, it also highlighted the strength of Laurel’s community. Neighbors checked in on one another, helped clear sidewalks, and offered assistance to elderly residents who were unable to safely manage snow and ice on their own.
Moments like these are a reminder of what makes Laurel special — a community that shows up for one another when it matters most.
Prince George's County Public Schools Closed Through Thursday

Prince George's County Public Schools announced that all schools would remain closed through at least Thursday, January 29, following Winter Storm Fern's impact on the region.
The school system said it would send out daily updates by 5:00 PM, with any decisions about school on Friday likely to come Thursday. As one of the DMV region's largest school districts, PGCPS operates 202 schools and more than 1,300 buses serving students across Prince George's County's 500 square miles—meaning conditions can vary widely from one area to another.
"Even if major roads appear clear, sidewalks, parking lots, or bus lots in other parts of the County may remain unsafe," the district explained in communications to families. The extended closure gave crews time to ensure all routes would be safe for students and bus drivers.
To support families during the extended closure, PGCPS implemented emergency meal services on Wednesday, January 28, at five school sites: Drew-Freeman Middle School, Fairmont Heights High School, Greenbelt Middle School, Laurel High School, and Surrattsville High School, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
County Executive Aisha Braveboy confirmed that crews were moving into neighborhoods to plow residential streets and would continue making passes along roads through the week. For families juggling work and childcare during the unexpected closure, this was a challenging week—but safety always comes first.

House Fire on Washington Boulevard Brings Large Emergency Response in North Laurel

A structure fire in the 9900 block of Washington Boulevard prompted a significant emergency response in Laurel on Monday evening. According to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, crews were dispatched around 9:00 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting heavy fire and smoke coming from a mixed-use building.
When firefighters arrived, they encountered intense fire conditions and a partial structural collapse. All occupants had safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. Due to instability of the building, firefighters operated defensively, attacking the fire from the exterior. More than 60 firefighters worked for over an hour to bring the blaze under control, navigating additional challenges including icy conditions, water access issues, downed electrical wires, nearby parked vehicles, and a pressurized tank that required continuous cooling.
The building contained both residential living space and a commercial area, with the fire primarily impacting the residential portion and extending into the commercial side. Mutual aid was provided by Anne Arundel County, Prince George’s County, and Fort Meade. Red Cross assistance was requested for three adults, one child, and one dog displaced by the fire. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported, and the Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
